Founding

Founded by the Association du Musée acadien incorporée in 1985, the Centre for Acadian Research of Prince Edward Island was created to handle the acquisition and preservation of archival documents relating to the history and culture of Island Acadians.  It must also ensure that researchers can access these documents.  In the beginning, the Centre inherited many documents that had been accumulating at the Acadian Museum since its opening in 1964.  Since 1985, several organizations and individuals from the Acadian community of PEI have donated various archival fonds.

The Centre for Acadian Research of Prince Edward Island is managed by the employees of the Acadian Museum.  The lack of personnel dedicated solely to the Centre does not allow for the development of this Acadian organization.  However, because of annual Canadian Council of Archives projects, the Centre manages to hire a temporary employee, Edna MacKinnon, to take care of the filing and archive description.  Furthermore, Alice Richard, a faithful volunteer, is in charge of the genealogical requests received through correspondence or by telephone.  In fact, with its current resources, the Centre for Acadian Research manages to acquire and preserve at least a minimal amount of archival and genealogical documents, and promote the Centre and its services to clients.
