Gestures and Words

From June 1998 onwards

This exhibit on the Francophone artists of Canada, in which the Acadian Museum of Prince Edward Island took part, as did nine other Canadian museums from five provinces, is coordinated by the Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN).  The other participating museums are the Confederation Centre Art Gallery and Museum (Prince Edward Island), the Saint-Boniface Museum (Manitoba), the Musée acadien de l'Université de Moncton and the Galerie d'art de l'Université de Moncton (New Brunswick), the Musée régional de Rimouski, the Musée Maison Saint-Gabriel, La Pulperie de Chicoutimi, the Musée d'art de Joliette (Québec), the Willow Bunch Museum and the Centre des francophones de Talle de Saules (Saskatchewan).

The purpose of this exhibit is to promote Francophone artists and their works via the Internet and thus enrich the network of quality French content.

It brings together works accompanied by text from Francophone poets and writers, or museum curators.  The exhibit also includes one untitled work per museum, called a "silent" work.  Visitors are invited to share their impressions inspired by the work.  Besides the exhibit, each participating museum has submitted up to a hundred works which are exposed in an "open storeroom".

This exhibit was made possible with the assistance of Human Resources Development Canada's Youth Employment Strategy and is part of Canadian Heritage's Young Canada Works Program.  The museums were able to purchase the equipment required to carry out the project with a financial contribution from SchoolNet Digital Collections (SDC), an Industry Canada program.
