Evangeline's Odyssey
Mid-June to November 22, 1998
This travelling exhibit was produced by the Musée acadien de l'Université de Moncton in 1997 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's publication of the epic poem Evangeline. The poem can be accessed on the Musée acadien de l'Université de Moncton's Web site.
Retrace the poem's origins and history; its influence on Northern and Southern Acadians; artistic products in theatre, cinema, painting, carving, sculpture and music which were inspired by it; tourism and trade which resulted from it. The exhibit also allows for reflection on Evangeline's role in contemporary society by questioning her destiny. Artifacts bearing the Evangeline theme may come from anywhere.
The exhibit brings together over a hundred works of art, objects and graphics relating to the poem's heroine.
This exhibit was
produced with the financial support of the Museums Assistance Program of the Department of
Canadian Heritage, the Department of Municipalities, Culture and Housing of the Province
of New Brunswick, and l'Université de Moncton. Additional support was
provided by Ganong Brothers Limited, Hawk Communications, Quebecor (Atlantic) Limited and
the Moncton Museum.
