This exhibit is produced by the Musée acadien du Québec à Bonaventure, which is located in the Gaspésie area. It describes the Acadian presence in Québec. In fact, according to a survey conducted by the firm Léger et Léger, at least one million Québécois have Acadian roots. The exhibit is divided into five sections through which Acadian history is told from its beginning and explains why Acadians came to Québec. |
This exhibit is made up of 13 islands which include 28 script panels, 95 photographs / illustrations, 45 objects, an interactive card and an educational program adapted to various school levels.
The first section introduces the exhibit and gives a brief summary on Acadia. An interactive system allows us to rapidly visualize the geographic distribution of the Québécois of Acadian origin, as well as the progression of their settlement in Québec through the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Several Canadian families, especially families from Québec, hailing from the Gaspésie, Montérégie and Montreal areas, have preserved photos, illustrations and objects from ancient Acadia which are displayed in the second section. A video entitled "Québécois d'origine... acadienne", including accounts of various individuals on how they feel about belonging to the Acadian culture, and a game on CD-ROM, "L'Acadie en mots", on the richness and originality of the Acadian language make up the third and fourth sections of the visit. Finally, to complete the visit and to add a touch of humour to the exhibit, a chest containing costumes depicting the early 19th century is available to visitors to dress as their ancestors and if they wish, play in a vignette that will take them to another era and another language. With the assistance of an educational program, activities are organized and adapted to the primary and secondary school group levels.
This exhibit was organized with the co-operation of the Musée de la
civilisation in Québec and the financial contribution of Canadian Heritage through
the Museums Assistance Program and the Conseil régional de concertation et de
développement de la Gaspésie et des Îles-de-la-Madeleine. It was presented
at the Musée acadien du Québec à Bonaventure from June 23 to September 30,
1996 and is expected to travel from October 1996 to October 2000.
